The flood

On 26 August, part of a glacier on Langtang Lirung broke away and sent ice and rock crashing into the valley below. It dammed the river, and when that dam gave way, a wall of water, mud and boulders tore down through Rasuwa and Nuwakot and on towards Chitwan. Whole villages were buried, and roads and bridges were swept away, cutting communities off from the rest of the country. Well over a thousand people lost their lives, and thousands more are still missing. It is one of the deadliest glacier disasters the world has seen in modern times.

Our team member

Raju Tamang

One of our team lost his whole village. Raju Tamang has been with TBF for years: guiding our treks, hosting school groups in Bimire, and helping out with everything else in Kathmandu. His family's home in Bhaise is gone, so we decided to help re-home Raju's family.

JustGiving

101 donations and counting

Our JustGiving campaign has raised over £5,100 from 101 donations so far. People have given from all over the world, including an enormous donation of £650 from the British School of Guangzhou, China.

Every single donation, big or small, helps Raju to build a new life. Thank you, all of you. If you'd like to help, the campaign is still open.

Ferragudo, Portugal

Quiz night at Hugo's

Over in the Algarve, a crack team of ladies of leisure collectively known as "The Butterflies" threw a quiz and bingo afternoon at Hugo's Bar in Ferragudo on 7 October, with a raffle for afternoon tea at Casa de Violeta and a shiatsu massage with Solange. The afternoon raised €350 and £200 for the appeal, around €585 altogether. A massive thank you to the Butterflies, to Hugo's for hosting, and to everyone who came along, enjoyed themselves and made a difference at the same time.

Up to Nuwakot

In October, Ian and Raju rode up to Bhaise in Nuwakot to see the damage for themselves, and to document the scene from the ground and from the air.

The photos speak for themselves: houses half-buried in silt, a shrine sunk up to its roof, and buildings with whole floors torn out. There's a full video coming to the IanPaniwala YouTube channel soon.
